Nuclear Survival in
Maine

This is the nuclear target map for Maine, but remember, fallout can go anywhere or everywhere (and probably will). After you have looked at this map look at the Information for Maine that follows it.

UPDATE to Target Information!!!

It is recommended that you go through the following 10 steps in studying about the nuclear threat to Maine.

1. Look at the State Map above to see the target nuclear areas in Maine.

2. Look at the general expected fallout map to see where Maine
(according to the prevailing wind pattern)
gets fallout from other states.

3. If the state that you live in is anywhere EAST of any of the following 6 states in the prevailing wind pattern then look at the states in RED on the INDEX of STATES for

  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
  • Nebraska
  • Missouri
  • Colorado

  • These six states contain what is called DENSE PACK which I explain on each of those states pages. UNDERSTAND that the wind pattern COULD at that time be something other than the "prevailing" wind pattern.

    4. Bookmark the present URL or make a copy of this present address so that you can come back to it after going to

    Blast Mapper.

    This mapper is on someone else's web site so that you will need to save this address in order to return here if your back button doesn't work. However, you want to be sure to go the mapper site and calculate the damage to probable targets (cities) around you.

    5. Memorize the THREE top rules for survival. They are:

  • Number One - Get out of the cities!

  • Number Two - Get out of the cities!

  • Number Three - Get out of the cities!

  • 6. The follow-on rules are:
  • a. Have a shelter
  • b. Work with a group (you are going to need the manpower, brainpower, and skillpower).
  • c. Stock supplies.

    7. My Survival Web Page contains links to lots of other information such as free books to download about nuclear survival, links to plans for building shelters, and even free consultation about building a shelter.

    8. If you are SUPER concerned about nuclear survival you might consider joining the

    Ark Two Community.

    9. If you like, you can look at our Honor List for groups that we know of that have an existing rural location. Most of these, however, have no direct interest or preparation in regards to nuclear survival. At the bottom of this page is a Directory of our contacts in Maine. Many of the local entries for states were listed because of their Y2K concerns and may not have any nuclear concerns.

    10. And finally if you would like to be on the mailing list of the author of this site - send a blank email to:

    228. Saint Francis Community

    Saint Francis Community

    The St. Francis Community was founded by Lucy Poulin in 1976. It is a place where people live together, homestead like stewards of the earth, provide shelter and form community with the neediest. They work as volunteers at H.O.M.E.

    In 1983, the St. Francis Community joined the Sanctuary Movement. In 1986, they joined Emmaus International. Some have come here seeking to take the gospel seriously. Some have come because they have no other place to go. Some have come because they want to work to make our world a better place for all of us to live. Some have come because they need help and care.

    We work at carpentry and the construction of new homes. Some help clean up woodlots and gather firewood. We make balsam fir wreaths to sell, and we teach and work with work horses. We repair homes for elderly people who cannot afford to hire work done. We work in recovering the value of things and at times we work not by the value per hour but by the necessity of the work and the needs of the people.

    Monday through Friday mornings we have prayer service and breakfast together. Mondays and Wednesdays we have a supper, a scripture reading, and currently a Spanish lesson as well.

    On Saturdays we work at the farm repairing dwellings, cutting and fitting up firewood, and working with the horses. On Sundays we honor a day of rest.

    Though we have lived here for 10 years, this is the first time we have had electricity, and in one dwelling, running water. Most of our houses are still without basic facilities, but we live in a very beautiful place overlooking Toddy Pond. For the people here, it is a good place to live. We have very rich French intensive gardens that produce fresh vegetables, squash and pumpkins, a struggling orchard has begun, and the chickens, ducks and geese have a small new barn. Five cats have come to live in my household and I have grown fond of all of them, but have sent them all to family planning.

    We take much inspiration from the prayer of St. Francis:

    Dear God make us instruments of your peace;
    Where there is hatred, let us sow love.
    Where there is injury, pardon;
    Where there is doubt, faith;
    Where there is despair, hope;
    Where there is darkness, light and
    Where there is sadness, joy.

    Loving God, grant that we may not so much seek
    to be consoled as to console,
    to be understood as to understand,
    to be loved as to love,
    For it is in giving that we receive,
    And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
    H.O.M.E. Inc., established in 1970 as a craft cooperative, is a multi-faceted organization involved in economic reconstruction and social rehabilitation. In its 26 years of existence, it has grown from the single retail store where home crafters could sell their goods into a small community offering jobs, food, education, temporary shelter and home ownership to people and families in need.

    H.O.M.E. has seen from its beginning days that although the ownership of a home is of fundamental importance to a family, other services are needed to ensure family stability and foster self-esteem. In response to these needs, its activities have grown to include:

  • Five shelters for the homeless, and a social outreach program that touches the lives of several hundred persons annually.

  • A food bank, a soup kitchen, a recovery barn and thrift store (clothes and household goods) and free firewood for those who need it.

  • A learning center which includes a day-care center, literacy instruction, GED preparation, craft training, computer training and college-level courses, including the Rural Education Program (REP) and University of Maine Interactive Television courses (ITV).

  • A craft store featuring homemade items from 250 Maine residents, and handmade items from Central America.

  • Pottery studio, woodworking shop, weaving studio, leather shop, a small museum and a chapel.

  • A Garden program, Greenhouse and Farmer's Market.

  • A Free Medical Clinic.

  • Balsam Christmas Wreaths: wholesale, retail and mail order.

  • A publication department, including the quarterly newsletter: This Time.

  • Employment in lumber mill, shingle mill, garage and house construction.

  • A land trust - the Covenant Community Land Trust, and a house building program in which low-income families participate in the construction of their new homes. Twenty four houses have been built so far.

  • H.O.M.E. currently has Fjord horses for sale!

    The more the needs of low-income people have grown, the greater has been the response of H.O.M.E. in making the case for a different kind of world for them.

    Please come and visit us!
    H.O.M.E. is on US Route 1 on top of the hill, a couple of miles east of Bucksport, Maine.

    We are part of the World EMMAUS Movement.
